Public opinion, before and after their execution, was split between those who thought them innocent and those who thought them guilty. Also in 2008, release of grand jury transcripts showed that Ruth Greenglass’ testimony against Ethel Rosenberg in court differed from her testimony before the grand jury, and according to one expert, “cast considerable doubt” on that testimony.
The Rosenbergs have been featured in many novels, plays and other art media, as well as in several books reexamining the trial and the culture in which it took place. Most find the government overzealous and the evidence either manufactured or weak. Some investigators have concluded that the charges against the Rosenbergs were probably true. The controversy has not ended.
